Heads Up!
The Writer’s Astrological Almanac
by Kathy Watts
May 2018
all times are PDT.
Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto are retrograde throughout May but all the other planets are direct. The world may be in low gear, but not us. With the Sun approaching the sign of Gemini, we’re straining on the leash to do more, faster, to spend more time with more people, and to get more work out into the world.
Tue May 01 the Moon starts out in Scorpio but is in Sagittarius by 8:20 am. Pour your energy into pleasant interactions and get a lot done, some of it with other people.
Wed May 02 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. Don’t lose to much time talking or networking. Put the phone on mute. Get some words down. The Moon trines Mercury in the afternoon. Feel good about how much you’re accomplishing.
Fri May 04 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Capricorn. It’s the start of a productive as well as pleasant weekend.
Sat May 05 the Moon conjoins Pluto in Capricorn. This can make the afternoon exciting. It is Cinco de Mayo, after all. Later, at 11:20 pm, the Moon conjoins Mars in Capricorn. Tomorrow may be just as energetic. Get some work done anyway. Heads Up.
Mon May 07 the Moon is in Aquarius when Mercury squares Pluto. Think, read, and write more carefully. Be glad you did. Heads Up.
Tue May 08 the Moon is still in Aquarius when the Sun opposes Jupiter. This is a mild tug of war for power in the best of ways. Heads Up. The Jupiter opposition is also when Jupiter is the brightest in the night sky, transiting at midnight. Go out and look if you can.
Wed May 09 the Moon is in Pisces all day. Thinking and feeling want to blend together. Embrace this and see how it affects your work.
Thu May 10 the Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces. If feelings run high, pour them into your work.
Fri May 11 the Moon is in Aries when the Sun trines Pluto. You can make great headway on a project today. It might take an extra push of stubbornness, but that’s easy now. Heads Up.
Sat May 12 the Moon is still in Aries when Mercury squares Mars. Resist the urge to act before speaking, or even of writing (like, email or text?) before reading or proofreading. Heads Up.
Sun May 13 the Moon is still in Aries when Mercury conjoins Uranus at 3:50 am. Wake up with a bunch of crazy ideas, some good and some not so good. Heads Up. At 5:40 am Mercury changes signs, leaving Aries behind and entering Taurus. Thoughts turn to more practical, pragmatic matters. At 11:05 am the Moon conjoins Uranus near the end of Aries and goes void of course for ten whole minutes before also entering Taurus at 11:15 am. A zany desire or urge could strike at any time. Forty-two minutes later at 11:57 am the Moon conjoins Mercury in Taurus. Say something nice and deliver that pretty card. It’s Mother’s Day. Have a nice afternoon.
Mon May 14 the Moon is in Taurus all day. It first trines Saturn at 1:58 am, then opposes Jupiter at 5:08 pm, then trines Pluto at 11:05 pm. The Moon is busy but its effects don’t last long. The real news today is that this is the day before the New Moon. Be safe, cautious but not paranoid. Heads Up.
Tue May 15 we have the New Moon in Taurus at 4:48 am. This is the month to work on something romantic and beautiful. Heads Up. At 8:16 am Uranus changes signs, finishing with Aries and entering Taurus. Heads up, possibly for the next eight years. At 1:43 pm the Moon moves out of Taurus and enters Gemini. Heads Up for extra mercurial activity of all kinds from now until Thursday afternoon. At 9:55 pm, Mars changes signs, leaving Capricorn and entering Aquarius. Heads Up. Work production may decline a bit but work ethic may increase.
Wed May 16 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Make the most of it. It’s also the start of Ramadan.
Thu May 17 the Moon conjoins Venus in Gemini at 11:18 am and then goes void of course. Write that love poem before lunch. The Moon enters Cancer at 2:47 pm. Have a satisfying and safe-feeling afternoon and evening.
Fri May 18 the Moon is in Cancer when Mercury trines Saturn. You may think of a million things to do, then think better about almost all of them. And that’s fine. It’s the 38th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, for those of you writing disaster novels.
Sat May 19 the Moon is still in Cancer when Venus changes signs, leaving Gemini and entering Cancer. Aesthetics may get less playful and more deeply emotional. Heads Up. Today is also the last day this year that the Sun spends in luxurious, tempting Taurus. Tomorrow the world may seem brighter, faster, younger, and more mischievous. Heads Up.
Sun May 20 the Moon is in Leo when the Sun changes signs, leaves Taurus and enters Gemini. Heads Up in the brightest, most active and productive of ways. The biggest danger is that you may get distracted by too much fun and too many new interests. If so, consider this a month of research. At least take notes and pictures, and save the brochures.
Tue May 22 the Moon is in Virgo when Mercury opposes Jupiter. If an idea or approach, or plot twist, is too grandiose, you probably won’t have the patience to pull it off anyway. Heads Up.
Wed May 23 the Moon is void of course in Virgo when the Sun trines Mars at 7:39 pm. Do your best work and put forward the most compelling pitch or argument for something important to you. The Moon enters Libra at 11:52 pm. Sweet dreams.
Fri May 25 the Moon is in Libra when Jupiter exactly trines Neptune at 2:52 am. This is a long-lasting aspect that could bring you good, and inspiring, dreams for a long time. Don’t look for much in the daytime world but don’t discount it in your more artistic pursuits. At 6:38 am Mercury trines Pluto. Pluto may have big plans but Mercury is fickle and fleeting. I plan to sleep through this one. At 11:40 pm, Venus opposes Pluto. It’s a scary if sexy way to end the night. Aren’t we glad that the Moon is in Libra?
Sun May 27 the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Scorpio. Feel lucky in the most profound of ways.
Tue May 29 we have the Full Moon at 08 Sag at 7:20 am. Heads Up. Be fully engaged in the world, and participate as well as write about it. At 4:49 pm Mercury changes signs, leaves Taurus and enters its diurnal home sign, yes, Gemini. Heads Up. We now have the Sun and Mercury both in Gemini. Hit the ground running, and have fun. Wear your virtual knee pads and maybe helmet.
Wed May 30 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. We’ve had a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in mutable signs. People figure big in all that we do this month. The good news is, people like to read about people, don’t they?
Thu May 31 the Moon conjoins Saturn in Capricorn at 5:53 pm. Work as slowly as you please. Do it carefully, too.
The month of May is relatively unobscured by nasty, powerful aspects, although Pluto is quite active. Don’t be put off by any of that, though. Keep a light heart, your eyes open, your shoulders down, and your hands up. Work your heart out, intend to carry the intensity into June, and finish strong. Don’t miss a single day to express what is in you and wants to get out. Only you know what those things are. Heads Up!
