We start the last month of the year on a Saturday (Saturn’s day) with the Moon at home in Cancer. It may be an emotionally rich (and emotionally charged) month, so protect your heart and try to be open-hearted with others.  Feelings always rate high this time of year, given the holiday season and family involvements, without any extra help from the planets. Make it a deep, deep month!

Sun Dec 02 the Moon is in the final degrees, void of course, in Cancer when Jupiter exactly opposes the Sun. This means that Jupiter will be high in the sky at midnight, and that it will be at its brightest. Plus, Jupiter is situated in the midst of the beautiful stars of the constellation Taurus the Bull. Go out and look.  Astrologically speaking, no matter how big and empowered you may feel, you should have some reserve of critical thinking to  keep things under control and to make the most of this bright aspect. You may even be called on to be the focus of attention when you don’t want or ask for it. Twelve minutes after the opposition is perfected, the Moon moves on and enters Leo. The glamour and grandstanding of the weekend may be approaching its peak.

Wed Dec 05  the Moon is in Virgo all day. We have a month of Wednesdays with the Moon in a mutable sign. Is that not appropriate for such a socially intense time of year? Don’t let all your work time get eaten by social demands. There is a ton of inspiring socializing that you can write about later, though. Take notes, at least mental notes. Let Virgo help you stay disciplined today.

Mon Dec 10 the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Scorpio  early in the day. Be serious about the truly serious stuff and give everything else a light touch. Afternoon, Mercury changes signs, to leave Scorpio and enter the expansive generous sign of Sagittarius.  Thoughts get bigger and brighter.

Tue Dec 11 the Moon is Scorpio when the planet Mercury squares the planet Neptune. Even uncomfortable dreams full of conflict can be full of inspiration. Ten minutes later, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Scorpio, then goes void of course. Venus in Scorpio can get a little kinky, but  with Saturn around you won’t have to get into a whole lot of trouble. Put those racy impulses and flashy comments into the hands and mouths of your characters. Eleven hours later, the Moon conjuncts Mercury in Sagittarius. Be content with the days’ efforts. Perhaps have a chat and a drink with a writer friend.

Wed  Dec 12 the Moon is in Sagittarius all day.  If you can’t write, edit. Is something finished?  Submit it! At least read. It’s also the day before the New Moon. Heads Up. Make an extra effort to be safe and practical.

Thu Dec 13 is the New Moon at 21 Sag.  Be grateful for the big things and big people in your life.  Look in the mirror and say, ‘Thank you for being me.’ Mean it. Now share yourself with the world in a big way all lunar month long. Be  gracious about it, though, and don’t force yourself on anyone.

Fri Dec 14 the Moon is in Capricorn when Mercury trines Uranus. Uranus carries a bit of an extra kick, since it just turned stationary direct yesterday. Don’t expect to feel much influence, though, unless Uranus is strongly placed in your own natal chart.  Five minutes later the Moon conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn. A lot of us usually feel this one. Luckily, it’s all very early in the day, perhaps before some of us are even out of bed. This can still be a productive, creative day.

Sat Dec 15 the Moon conjuncts Mars in Capricorn. This can give you a lift and extra energy. Work and play may blur together. At night, Venus changes signs, moving out of Scorpio and into Sagittarius. Wherever you are, whomever you’re with, be sure to smile. Venus is now a guest in Jupiter’s house. Let the holiday spirit begin in earnest!

Mon Dec 17 the Moon is void of course in Aquarius when Mercury opposes Jupiter. This could be big constructive critical thinking, or big mischief, or both. Heads Up. Seven hours later the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. This will definitely not help with the critical thinking part of life. Dream responsibly.

Wed Dec 19 the Moon is in Pisces almost all day, going void of course in the evening. You can churn out a lot of crude but effective first draft today. You don’t have show it anyone, either. Shortly before end of day (on the US west coast, anyway) the Moon enters Aries. If you can’t sleep and are compelled to do a night owl shift of writing, why fight it?

Thu Dec 20 the Moon conjuncts Uranus in Aries. Fresh ideas may just fall out of the sky into your head. It’s also the last day of the Sun in Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius. Heads Up. This can sometimes be a high-energy, heady kind of day. A lot of people might be compelled to big actions and big feelings. Tomorrow the world may develop a deeper, more solid and understated nature.

Fri Dec 21 is the first day of the Sun in Capricorn. It’s the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, giving us the shortest day and longest night of the year. Cast an ingress chart for your location to get a glimpse of what the next three months may be like for you. This year, 0 degrees Capricorn also coincides with the galactic center of the Milky Way, our home galaxy, or so people are saying. If you think the motion of the outer planets is slow, well, the precession of the stars is even slower. For the last several years, and for the next several, 0 degrees Capricorn will be be conjunct the galactic center. Oh, and the galactic center is not exactly a point in the sky but it occupies several minutes of arc, depending on what frequency you’re looking. I am not going Mayan apocalypse with this; in fact I’m not even giving this a heads up. The Sun is now in Saturn-ruled Capricorn, and I have every expectation of the world still being here tomorrow. If nothing else, Saturn has staying power. Dig deep into new life and let the new cycle of the Sun begin! Shine on!

Mon Dec 24 the Moon enters Gemini at the very end of day. Look forward to a mentally and socially active Christmas eve, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. A ton of classic works have been written about this time of year. Consider writing one of your own. Regardless, it’s the Moon’s day of the week. Enjoy the people in your company.

Tue Dec 25 the Moon is in Gemini all day. The Moon conjuncts Jupiter late in the afternoon. It’s a lucky, happy day that you can write about later. Don’t eat or drink too much, especially if you’re driving. Thirty-one minutes later, Mars moves out of Capricorn and enters the sign Aquarius. Robust Mars is still sort of on a Saturn tether (Saturn traditionally ruling Aquarius) but now there’s maybe a touch of Uranus (the modern ruler of Aquarius) to give that Mars energy some outlet. Make it creative, fun, surprising, and positive. Yes, in addition to being a complicated sometimes baggage-laden major holiday, it’s also an astrologically complex day. Merry Christmas!

Wed Dec 26 the Moon is in Gemini all day. Have a great Kwanzaa! Want more holidays? It’s Boxing Day. Also St. Stephen’s Day.  I’m no doubt missing several more. You can still carve out some work time, if only to get a little privacy, peace, and quiet to recharge those writer/artist batteries.

Thu Dec 27 the Moon is in Gemini for the first half of the day, then enters its home sign Cancer. If you’re a night owl writer like me, you might sleep through most of the morning. The Moon in Cancer can bring good food and and smells to the workplace, though. Go easy on yourself and do what you can. Let the year wind down naturally and go with the flow. If things are hectic and involved,  you can navigate that, too. Just keep those emotions honest and under control and nobody’s buttons will get pushed.

Mon Dec 31 the Moon is in Leo when Mercury changes signs and enters the sign of Capricorn. Here’s the anchor that we want to take into the new year. If you’re the sort to make resolutions for the new year, this is a gift. The universe is offering a clearer head and more practical thinking at this pivotal time. The Moon is also reminding us to love our work, ourselves, and the glory of life that every writer and artist is constantly exploring and celebrating.

We end the year with Saturn exerting its power over the Sun, Mercury, and also Mars (if you accept the traditional notion that Saturn rules Aquarius). Don’t feel glum about this. Be grateful for the moderating influences made available to us. Saturn has staying power, remember? So do we. Saturn is the embodiment of “perseverance furthers.’ No one can stop us from creating, no one but ourselves.

Be grateful for all the good that happened in the departing year (yes, there was some, no matter how it looks or feels at the moment) and be grateful for the incoming year and all its seen and unseen opportunities that have our names on them. These may be serious difficult times for many of us (can you say ‘Saturn in Scorpio?’) but writers and artists have a strong, serious backbone of conviction and commitment. All of us. Yes, you, too. Saturn sometimes bring irrational fear (especially combined with Neptune) but we can acknowledge that fear, call it by its true name, and plug on regardless. We are creators. That’s what we do. We create. Then we perfect it. In the end, even Saturn respects us, if we respect our work. Face the uncertain future and call it by its true name, which is the Present.

And on we go! Have a  marvelous, rich, and splendid coming year, one day at a time.

Heads Up!
