Algol strikes again
by Dorothy J. Kovach on May.26, 2009, under Algol, Traditional Astrology
Just after midnight, Sunday morning, the demonic star Algol turned a concert in Rabat, Morocco, from a night of beautiful melodies into one of ultra deadly pandemonium.
As reported in Sunday’s BBC:
“Some 40 were injured when a wire fence collapsed at the Mawazine festival.
The incident happened on Saturday night, when some 70,000 spectators were packed into the Hay Nahda stadium to see Moroccan singer Abdelaziz Stati.
“The nine-day-long event has featured such international stars as Kylie Minogue, Algerian rai singer Khaled, Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder.
“Analysts say the nine-day-long Mawazine festival is one of several events aimed at promoting Morocco’s image as a modern, tolerant nation…The festival was drawing to a close when the stampede occurred. Shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, thousands of spectators hurried to leave and a wire fence toppled over.” MORE
That tip once again, from David Crook
Once again, we see how this binary eclipsing star’s presence can turn the most pleasant experience into one of sheer horror. This time, it is not fire, nor war, but mass panic. The ancients depicted Algol as a severed head. When astrologers see this star, in maps, they are usually filled with a sense of dread and foreboding. This binary eclipsing star, often makes us, lose our sense of rationality. In many ways the great extremes Algol provokes, reminds me of the way in which Jyotisis see Rahu (known in the west as the North Node). While on the one hand, having this in one’s own chart, will bring a sense of great ambition, and the desire to get what one wants, no matter the costs. When Algol is prominent, as it was doubly, at midnight, both Mercury and the Moon were on Algol at the graveyard of the chart, Pied Piper like, calling 11 souls to their death.
We are all one.
Mercury is our capacity to intellectualize, and reason. Nowadays, modern
astrologers tend to Mercury, a great portion of credit, if not all credit
for the workings of the brain. We celebrate the most intellectual, the most verbose. Perhaps they think that because of the great mechanizations and achievements of modern society, we are now purely rational beings. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Mercury is nothing without the Moon.
The Moon is the beacon of the night, lighting our path in uncharted waters.
The Moon represents the Mind that is always awake, and thus, all seeing. She brings us the images we summon up when we remember things. And above all the Moon represents the light that we see in our heart. However, this ‘seeing,’
is not just the kind we do by day; the kind of seeing we are talking about is a kind of ‘knowing. ‘ I grok.’ It is the Moon, not Mercury who brings us the light we see in our dreams. Because of this, the Moon is not just our ability not just to feel, but to also to know. She is that little voice that warns you when trouble is coming.
Mercury, on the other hand, is a neuter planet. Because of this, he/she does not feel. Since he she/ he is always getting too close to the Sun, he/she is always having to repair himself from burnout due to the constant combustion, and so sadly, Mercury misses out on a lot of other factors, because he/she spends all too much of his/her life in the dark, unable to see the forest for the trees. If we remain faithful to Hermes axiom, ‘as above so below’
this beckons the question, ‘how can a planet that spends so much time in the dark, ‘see the light?’ Let’s face it, knowledge is a Mercury function.
Smart is good, but it is far, far better to be wise.
The Moon is not just our ability not just to feel, but to also to know. It is this wisdom so inherent in the Moon that made Jupiter chose the sign, Cancer to find his greatest glory, or his exaltation.
Together, the Moon and Mercury two represent how we are all one. This is where we are part of the crowd, where we have not yet thrown off our ‘gut’
instincts. When we see both the Moon and Mercury on the Medusa, as they were just after the ‘witching hour, on Sunday, any sense of rationality, not to mention ‘humanity’ is thrown out the window. No matter how, rich, nor culturally superior, nor educated we are, we become uncontrollably swept up in the greater cause, as we are but a small part of a much larger force, and our only instinct is to survive.
Astrology holds to the ancient axiom, ‘as above so below.’ This statement means, simply that whatever is happening in the heavens above, is reflected down below, here on earth. According to ancient cosmic doctrine, each main department of life is given a specific place in the zodiacal map. Just as two weeks ago, we discussed the 4th house as our ultimate place of comfort – home sweet home, where we are freed from the shackles of the 9 to 5 work world, and can let our hair down and kick back and relax.
The fifth house will tell us what activity brings us pleasure. As the 2nd house from the 4th, in a sense, it is the currency of the 4th. In other words, the 5th house will tell us how we prefer to spend our leisure. If we have Venus in the 5th, then partying like its 1999 will come quite naturally to us. Just because a person has Saturn in the 5th does not mean that he or she will not have fun. Instead, such people may prefer solitary pursuits rather than a night of hard drinking with our pals.
It all depends on the individual chart, but the 5th will tell you how you like to have fun., be it concerts, sports, and or playing chess. It is where that we can take Jesus’ advice and ‘be like little children;’ the place were spontaneity rules, and where we can dance and sing or sit in perfect solitude, to our hearts content. Lilly said that the 5th house ruled ale houses, taverns, and plays.’ Anything endeavor that allows you to lose the sense of time, is considered a 5th house endeavor. It surprised me that Lilly said black and white were the colors of the 5th house. This seemed to be rather stark contrasts, until I thought of how quickly ‘one too, many’
can change everything. In this instance, as happy concert goers were exiting the arena, a wire fence broke, and in one split second, joy turned to tragedy.

Is the Moon, in contrast with Venus who links with Eros, not the symbol/representative of the Agape, the Love of the Divine? One more “forgotten” aspect…?
Wonderfull article, Dorothy! Very inspiring!

Why you have brought up a word that I have not heard used in astrology since my youthful days studying with Richard Idemon. Indeed, Agape, as I recall meant unconditional love, devoid (a double negative, btw ;-p) of ‘eros’ or sexual gratification. Indeed Moon does fit the bill, as the kind of sacrifice where a mother will throw her body on her child to spare the little one. Many thanks for your analogy and your compliments. I really appreciate them.
Love,
Dorothy
