I don’t know why, but I really thought that the normally ‘cautious’ Khamenei had more smarts than this. Perhaps it was wishful thinking on my part. I had hoped the fixity of the Moon would delay the inevitable. However, this was not to be. Wisely or not, Khamenei has already given the order to crackdown. If indeed, he tried to fix the election, thanks to technology, the grand ayatollah cast the seeds of his own demise because the whole world is watching. He has to know that each death is blood on his hands. In a land that reveres martyrdom, this means they will be coming for him chanting ‘God is great’ just as they did the Shah 30 years ago. Each person that suffers, each person that is killed will only serve to hasten his demise and fortify the will of the people. Every repressive act will pound a nail in the coffin of his theocratic regime. How much longer he and his band of clerics can cling to power by their fingertips is anybody’s guess. Why would he be so stupid to rush to kill? Perhaps, this is how it is when you are disposed by a blinding star, you just don’t see.
